5 Tips for Installing Wood Flooring

While your Copperas Cove, TX, DIY flooring installation seems like a great idea to save money, it is not always as simple as it looks. Your home improvement project will go a lot more smoothly if you keep a few tips in mind:

Examine Your Subfloor

You need a relatively level subfloor, with height changes less than 3/16″ over a 6′ span. Screw down loose boards or use a floor leveling putty to smooth out uneven sections.

Acclimate the Wood

If you install the wood before it has acclimatized to the room, it could cup. However, some movement is natural, so leave a ¼” gap around the perimeter to accommodate any fluctuations.

First Row Must be Straight

If the first row is off even a fraction of an inch, that fraction will grow exponentially over the length of the room.

Top Nail & Glue the Boards

You’ll likely end up with boards in spaces where the nailer will not fit, and you will need to top nail or face nail. Use wood glue to bead the groove of the previous board, and then use scrap wood and a pry bar to wedge the boards in place.

Buy or Rent the Right Tools

Having the right flooring installation tools will make your job infinitely easier, and the finished product will look that much better.

Time and patience are the most important tools you will bring to the process, but you will have an incredible wood flooring installation when complete.
